We conduct research to find innovative solutions to complex health problems. Our research focuses on respiratory diseases, immunology, infectious diseases, diabetes and endocrinology, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases and vaccine development. A total of 72,000 employees (2023) in over 140 countries, including 950 in Austria, work at MSD to solve health challenges through medical innovation. Of these, almost 21,800 are directly involved in research and development. In 2023, we will have enrolled more than 100,000 patients in our clinical trials at more than 21,000 sites worldwide. In addition, $30.5 billion of our global sales were invested in research and development in 2023, making us one of the largest research based companies in the world.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

Our research priorities<\/h2>

We address the world\u2019s most difficult health challenges, following world-class science. We are well equipped for the future: Thanks to a broad-based and promising development program, we want to continue to make new ground-breaking therapeutic concepts available in the future – so that people can have hope for a cure or a better quality of life. By researching and developing new and innovative drugs and vaccines, we want to help solve the world’s health problems.

MSD has been involved in the research and development of HPV vaccines for over 20 years. More than 500 million vaccinations have been administered worldwide. We are also continuing to research new pneumococcal vaccines for children and adults, after MSD’s first vaccine was approved in the 1970s.

Globally and in Austria, we are focusing particularly on the field of oncology. Around 45,000 people in Austria are diagnosed with cancer every year. In order to contain this disease as effectively as possible, more than 2,250 clinical trials are currently being conducted worldwide with cancer drugs from MSD. 46 indications for 22 tumour types have already been approved. Research also enables us to gather important data to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of our products.

With a total of 37 clinical trials in around 85 study centres, we are one of the absolute leaders in Austrian research. The studies are mainly in the areas of oncology, HIV, COPD-PH, NASH and heart failure.<\/p>

Counterfeit medicines pose a threat to public health worldwide. Many counterfeit medicines contain the wrong dose of the active ingredient or no active ingredient at all. In some cases, they also contain substances that are harmful to health. We therefore take action worldwide to combat counterfeit medicines and support criminal and civil sanctions against counterfeiters.<\/p>\n

Our Centre for Observational and Real-World Evidence (CORE) is dedicated to the science of understanding how our medicines work and perform in the real world. We believe that data generated in everyday clinical practice is an important complement to our rigorous clinical trial programme. It allows us to bring insights from clinical practice back into our research laboratories to better understand our existing medicines and to support the discovery and development of future therapies.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n
